It's here! Walt Disney Day falls on the first Monday of December every year and we here at Goldsmith Vintage can't wait to celebrate! Disney has cast a spell on all of our lives for over 80 years through it's magical movies, enchanted kingdoms and the unending stream of talented performers who we've watched grow before our eyes on the Disney Channel, such as Britney, Christina and Justin to name a few.
Today, to celebrate Walt Disney Day, we take a look at some of our favourite Disney stars who have come out as LGBTQ+ and shared a little of their magic with us. Check out our favourite Disney fashion picks at the end.
Miley Cyrus
How could we not love Miley? Starting her phenomenal career on the Disney channel as the super sweet Hannah Montana she stole our hearts at an early age. She showed us her free-spirited side throughout her Bangerz era and then went on to found the Happy Hippie Foundation in 2014. This nonprofit organisation fights injustices currently being faced by homeless youth, LGBTQ+ youth and other "vulnerable populations." In addition she donated $500,000 to The Foundation for AIDS Research. As her fans are will know, she came out as pansexual some years ago and at just 29 years old, the Grammy-nominated singer has consistently shown that she's one of the world's most influential LGBTQ+ activists, employing her position in the media to advocate for acceptance and equality for all! In her own words: "We can kiss who we want / We can screw who we want." Go Miley!
Joshua Bassett
Joshua first graced our screens in his starring role as Ricky Bowen at age 17 on Disney's ever popular High School Musical: The Series in which the students from the school where the High School Musical films were shot, stage a musical production based on the franchise. Joshua spoke candidly during a Q&A with Clevver News that he thinks Harry Styles is totally “hot” and casually went on to say, “I guess this is also my coming out video”.
The 20-year-old performer also stated "I always had a pretty feminine sort of energy in my life,", referring here to his days of growing up in Oceanside, California, in a home with his five artistically minded sisters. "My sisters would put me in a Snow White dress and have me run around my house.”
Rowan Blanchard
Rowan has been the star of the Disney Channel's Girl Meets World since the summer of 2014. Recently she took to her Twitter to announce to fans that she is queer. In addition she said that if her on-screen character turned out to be queer too, that she would be one hundred percent supportive. Blanchard, 14 added that she doesn’t want her sexuality to be labeled as “straight, gay or whateva”; she prefers the fluid term, queer. When probed as to why she refused to choose a label, (shocking that she should even have to suffer this question) she said she is “open to liking any gender in the future.”
